1992 Formula 1 world champion
Having raced for some of the biggest teams in Formula 1, including Ferrari, McLaren and Williams, being crowned Formula 1 world champion in 1992, Nigel Mansell CBE has certainly had an extremely successful career in motorsport.
Making his Formula 1 debut at the 1980 Austrian Grand Prix whilst racing for Lotus, this is where Nigel made his name in the sport before moving to Williams. Here he achieved his first Formula 1 victory in the European Grand Prix before moving to Ferrari in 1989. He spent just one season with the Italian team before moving back to Williams.
With Williams, he won his first World Championship title making him an instant hero in the UK. Surprisingly, following his victory, he made the decision to retire from Formula 1, signing for Newman/Haas Racing in the CART series. Despite making the move to a different motorsport discipline, he showed his versatility on the track winning the World Championship in his first season in the sport.
After two years in the CART Indycar series, he made a brief return to Formula racing once again for Williams. He ended his Formula 1 career for good in 1995 with McLaren with his final F1 win coming at the Australian Grand Prix.
Nigel has also spent time racing in the British Touring Car Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
