England legend and Match of the Day host
From leading the attack at his boyhood club, Leicester City, to winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup and hosting the country’s most popular football programme, Match of the Day, Gary Lineker OBE is one of the most recognisable faces in football.
Beginning his career at Leicester City in 1978 he helped the club to the 1980 Second Division title. Gaining a reputation as a poacher in the box, he racked up more than 100 goals for the Foxes. This form did not go unnoticed and saw him receive an England call-up in 1984. Following six years with Leicester he made the move to Everton, spending a year with the Merseyside club before moving to Spanish giants, Barcelona FC. Gary spent three years in Spain, helping the club win the Copa del Ray and European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Winning more individual awards than club trophies, in 1986 Gary was the top scorer at the World Cup winning the Golden Boot. In 1989 he returned to England, signing for Tottenham Hotspur and the club won the 1991 FA Cup. As his career approached its end, Gary spent two years playing for Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, before retiring in 1994.
Following his retirement Gary has become a prominent figure in the media presenting the world’s longest running football show, Match of the Day since 1999.
